Green Party Welcomes Government ‘pause’ on Hinkley Deal

29 July 2016

THE Green Party’s MEP for South West England, Molly Scott Cato, has welcomed further scrutiny of a plan to build the most expensive power plant in the world.

French firm EDF approved the funding at a board meeting on Thursday but the British government then said it needed to review the project.

Scott Cato said:

“It’s good to see the Government looking again at this disastrous plan. Any objective assesment of the facts will make clear the absurdity of building this colossal white elephant.

“The politics surrounding this deal are now clear: the French Government is trying to use the Hinkley project to pour money into EDF. Rather then ploughing billions into this outdated scheme the Government should be redoubling efforts to build up Britain’s decentralised, renewable infrastructure.

“The Government should now scrap this hideously expensive project – and get on with the job of building an energy system fit for the future. We can meet our energy needs through a combination of demand reduction and investment in renewables - we needn't rely on 20th century dinosaurs in the 21st century. ”
