Natalie Bennett calls for investment in 'genuinely affordable social homes'

16 August 2016

Responding to findings showing that five million private renters are at risk of losing their home if they lose their wage, Green Party leader Natalie Bennett said:

“Millions of Britons are having to live in great insecurity on a daily basis.

"Our economy is not delivering jobs workers can build a life on, and the market is not delivering the affordable homes households need."

A report by former pensions minister Steve Webb found a steep rise across the UK in the number of working people who would potentially be at risk of being unable to meet their rent if they lost their wage through unemployment or sickness, as they would not qualify for housing benefit.

Bennett added:

“The market failed to build enough houses for decade and it is time to invest in genuinely affordable social homes that remain in public hands."
