Brexiteers must not be given carte blanche on exit deal, say Greens

30 August 2016

Green MEP Molly Scott Cato has warned against giving Boris Johnson, Liam fox and David Davis 'carte blanche' in the forthcoming Brexit negotiations, after he suggested that Article 50 could be triggered without a Parliamentary vote on the terms of exit. Scott Cato, who is the Green Party's spokesperson for EU relations, called Hague's comments 'deeply misguided' and argued that a second referendum on the final terms of a Brexit deal is likely to be necessary.

She said:

“William Hague’s suggestion that Johnson, Fox and Davis should be given carte blanche to negotiate whatever Brexit deal they like with no accountability to Parliament or to the British public is deeply misguided.

“A majority of the public voted to leave the EU, and of course that decision must be respected. But nobody voted on what Brexit looks like - and it is very possible that we could end up with a deal that is worse for working people who voted leave than what we have now. If that is the case, a second referendum on the terms of the deal would be the only way to secure a genuine mandate for triggering article 50.”
