Caroline Lucas: Fossil fuels must be locked in the ground if we are to save our oceans

6 September 2016

Responding to a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature [1], which found oceans have sucked up huge amount of heat due to escalating greenhouse gas emissions, affecting marine species, Caroline Lucas said:

“We have received warning after warning of the dangerous impact of global warming on our world - when will we listen?

“This latest report has confirmed what we already knew, that the climate crisis is having a devastating effect and that our oceans cannot cope with rising temperatures.

“We must lock fossil fuels in the ground and urgently invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency if we are to stand any chance of keeping the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees centigrade and protecting our oceans.”
