Plastic bag charge success should extend to disposable coffee cups, say Greens

29 September 2016

Responding to news today that since the 5p plastic bag charge was introduced 90% of shoppers now use their own [1], Jenny Jones, Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb, said:

“The way the 5p plastic bag charge has encouraged people to use their own bags is great example of how the clever use of charges can influence our behaviour for the better. The fewer carrier bags we use, the less thrown away plastic there is to damage our oceans, litter our streets and overwhelm our landfill sites.

“But we mustn’t become complacent - the next challenge is to make disposable coffee cups actually recyclable. People think these cups are recyclable but they’re not, and a charge similar to that for plastic bags could dramatically reduce the number that end up in landfill as waste.”
