Dangerous new climate reality must rule out airport expansion, say Greens

24 October 2016

Keith Taylor, Green Party MEP for the South East, is calling on Theresa May to act decisively to rule out airport expansion as a new report reveals world CO2 emissions have surged beyond the critically important 400ppm threshold.

Keith, a vocal opponent of airport expansion who sits on the European Parliament’s Environment committee, said:

“The world has entered a dangerous new climate change reality. World average CO2 emissions have breached the critically important 400ppm threshold. This is a sombre reminder that the action on climate change needs to be the top priority informing all government policy-making.

Instead, we have a Prime Minister who is yet to ratify a historic Paris climate agreement that, today, takes on a whole new significance and urgency. We also have a government that is, tomorrow, set to approve the expansion of an aviation industry that is already a top-ten global polluter. An industry that will see its CO2 emissions balloon by 300% if action isn’t taken sooner rather than later.

Theresa May must move quickly and decisively to reject airport expansion following today’s revelation. The Prime Minister can ratify the Paris Agreement and uphold our climate commitments under the accord, as promised, or sanction airport expansion. She cannot do both. No new runways is the right and only choice for Britain and the planet.”
