Jonathan Bartley: More councils must accept Calais children as demolition of camp begins

25 October 2016

* Bartley said: “It is deeply disappointing that one quarter of local authorities have not accepted unaccompanied refugee children from Calais”

As the demolition of the refugee camp in Calais begins, Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley says Greens up and down the country will continue to put pressure on local authorities to welcome unaccompanied children. [1]

Bartley said:

“It is deeply disappointing that one quarter of local authorities have not accepted unaccompanied refugee children from Calais.

“The hostility from some Conservative MPs and certain sections of the media towards child refugees over the past two weeks has been shameful. We know our country is more generous than this.

“With the demolition of the camp beginning today it is increasingly urgent the Government brings as many children as possible to safety in the UK.

“But it can only do this if councils agree to accept them and if they are given the support that they need to welcome new arrivals. Up and down the country Greens have been pressing local authorities to welcome refugees and we will continue to do so.”
