* Molly Scott Cato: ‘To call for access to the single market while pandering to the Right on immigration is a misguided strategy that will end in failure’

Green MEP Molly Scott Cato has responded to John McDonnell’s speech today [1] saying his plan for leaving the EU could “play into the hands of Theresa May and the Brexit boys”.

Scott Cato, Green MEP and spokesperson on EU relations, said:

“John McDonnell is right to warn against the risks of a hard Brexit but his vision for a ‘fair’ exit from the European Union is flawed, and it may play into the hands of Theresa May and the Brexit boys.

“It’s unfortunate that Labour seem to have capitulated on free movement, which is a reciprocal right that UK citizens also benefit from. Our European partners have been clear that there will be no deal that allows goods and money to travel freely but not workers. So to call for access to the single market while pandering to the Right on immigration is a misguided strategy that will end in failure.

“We need to be realistic about what is achievable and to work in partnership with our European neighbours if we are to protect ourselves from the serious dangers of a hard Brexit.”
