The Green Party has welcomed a United Nations (UN) vote to start negotiations on a treaty to outlaw nuclear weapons [1].
Molly Scott Cato, Green Party MEP for the South West, said:
“Thursday was a historic day with vital support for disarmament at the EU and UN, but it is deeply disappointing that the UK finds itself on the wrong side of history. Where others are working for global cooperation to achieve peace, our government's approach to foreign policy is leaving us increasingly isolated.
“Nukes not only fail to keep us safe but they also increase the danger we’re facing. Just imagine any mistake or terrorist incident involving these weapons, it could kill millions. Keeping and supporting nuclear weapons sends a dangerous message to the rest of the world that security requires the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction – that is the opposite of what we should be saying.”
On Thursday (October 27) the European Parliament also voted in favour of a historic resolution, co-authored by Scott Cato, which called on all governments of the EU to vote in favour of the UN negotiation process [2].
Scott Cato said:
“In the wake of our decision to leave the EU we have to ask ourselves 'What is our place in the world?' I feel very strongly that our place is to work with our European neighbours leading the world towards a future of peace and genuine security.”
