Caroline Lucas responds to Paris Agreement entering into force

4 November 2016

Caroline Lucas MP has responded to the Paris Agreement coming into force, calling on the Government to close the gap between its rhetoric and policies on climate change and transition to a zero-carbon economy.

Lucas, co-leader of the Green Party, said:

“It is very good news that the Paris Agreement has come into force, but let’s not forget how far we still have to go. We know that without urgent action we will blow the 1.5 degree target within years and that even keeping warming below 2 degrees will be extremely challenging.

“From the reckless pursuit of fracking, to approving a climate-busting runway at Heathrow, there is an ever increasing gap here in the UK between the Government’s rhetoric and the reality of their policies on climate change. Once the UK has ratified the Paris Agreement, the pressure will be on for Ministers to match their international commitments with real action at home.

“With the Emissions Reduction Plan and the new industrial strategy due early next year, the government should seize the moment and embrace the just transition to a zero-carbon economy. Whether it’s phasing out fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy, ditching polluting vehicles and introducing electric cars, or a national programme of energy efficiency, we need a bold and dynamic vision for our economy that can help us deliver on the Paris Agreement.”
