Greens condemn arrests of members of Turkey’s opposition HDP party

7 November 2016

The Green Party has condemned the arrests of members of Turkey’s opposition HDP party.

The HDP includes the Turkish Green and Left Party, and represents many diverse communities in Turkey including the Kurds, LGBTIQ+, Armenians and Roma.

Jonathan Bartley, Green Party co-leader, said:

“It is unacceptable that Selahattin Demirtas and the other members of the HDP opposition party have been unlawfully detained. Turkey is becoming more authoritarian by the day and this is another example of the great threat facing democracy in the country. The Green Party stands in solidarity with the HDP politicians boycotting parliament.”
