Green Party: Lives are wasted behind bars as Liz Truss fails to act on IPP sentences

17 November 2016

The Green Party has condemned the imprisonment of people beyond their release date.

Responding to news that some people are still behind bars ten years after their minimum term on Imprisonment for Public Protection sentences, which were ditched in 2014 [1], Charley Pattison, Green Party justice spokesperson, said:

“It is utterly unjust and unjustifiable that there are almost 4,000 people still trapped in prison beyond their release date. While Liz Truss fails to act people’s lives are being wasted behind bars.”

Pattison, a barrister who has represented IPP prisoners at Parole Board hearings, added:

“There is no excuse for continuing to detain people years after their original tariffs have expired and the provisions allowing Imprisonment for Public Protection sentences repealed. Liz Truss must end this injustice now.

“At a time when Government cuts and privatisation are leaving prisons under-staffed and stretched to breaking point we must do all we can to keep as many people out of prison as possible.”
