Green Party warns Government could be about to abandon 500,000 pensioners

*Jonathan Bartley calls on Government to ensure pensions of British nationals in other European countries

The Green Party has warned that almost half a million pensioners could lose the security of an uprated pension.

It has called on the Government to give a cast iron guarantee that the pensions of British citizens who choose to carry on living in the European Union will continue to have their pensions uprated annually.

There are currently 476,000 British people who have retired in other Europeans countries. [1] However British pensioners who live outside the European Union have their pensions frozen by the Government, receiving no annual pensions increase.

Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party, said:

"Freedom of movement is a right which has enabled many British people to retire across Europe.

“Following the vote to leave the European Union, the Government should give a cast iron assurance that should pensioners remain in the countries they now call home, they will not be penalised and face the financial insecurity experienced by many British pensioners elsewhere in the world.

"This is a guarantee that would not in any way undermine the Government's negotiating position.  It is about the responsibility that the Government has to those who have paid into the pensions system."
