Green Party: Deliveroo must give workers basic rights before taking on more staff

18 January 2017

The Green Party has called on Deliveroo to give all its workers basic rights before taking on more staff.

Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party, made the appeal to Deliveroo after it was announced the food delivery company plans to hire 300 new tech workers. [1] Deliveroo gives its riders self-employment contracts meaning they miss out on things like sick pay.

Bartley said:

“It is great to see Deliveroo creating more jobs in the UK, but they need to start looking after the workers they already have first.

“Deliveroo’s riders live in constant insecurity because of the company’s use of bogus self-employment contracts. Before taking on 300 highly skilled tech workers in its offices Deliveroo should acknowledge the incredible hard work of its riders who are out on our streets.

“We are calling on the company to end its use of self-employment contracts and guarantee all staff decent pay, sick and holiday leave and, most importantly, job security.”
