Hundreds take to streets of Bristol in support of Green candidate

27 May 2017

Hundreds of Green Party activists will take to the streets of Bristol this weekend in a mass rally in support of their candidate for Bristol West Molly Scott Cato.

With the Greens only needing a 4% swing to beat Labour in Bristol West, the Party is going all out to elect Molly Scott Cato to Westminster and make her Britain's second Green MP.

The Greens say that momentum is with them. Last weekend they knocked on 12,000 doors and predict that they will be able to visit 25,000 homes in the constituency this weekend. They believe their stance on issues like Brexit, a universal basic income, as well as the popularity of Caroline Lucas, who is defending her seat of Brighton Pavilion on June 8, will win them votes in the city.

Both Caroline and co-leader Jonathan Bartley will address the crowds gathered in Bristol this weekend.

Caroline Lucas will say:

“It’s been my honour to be our Party’s MP over the last seven years, but I must admit it gets a bit disappointing when you wonder where the rest of the opposition are on some of the most vital issues of our time - our NHS and public services, our environment and climate change. And, of course Brexit.

“We need a much stronger opposition to the most extreme Conservative government this country has ever seen, and a second Green MP will transform our impact on British politics. I need Molly next to me on the opposition benches.”

Molly Scott Cato will pay tribute to Caroline Lucas and make clear that the Greens offer a distinctive alternative:

“Where Labour is divided on key issues we are united. Where Labour have whips and party lines, we have the freedom to stick to our principles. And when Labour announce bold new policies, we’re glad to hear that they’ve been reading our last manifesto, and decided to catch up. And they’ve still a way to go to match our commitments on a publicly owned NHS, scrapping nuclear weapons and offering people a say on the Brexit deal.

“Bristol has an international reputation as a green city and I'm inviting people to make history here in Bristol West on June 8 by electing me as the country's second Green MP.”
