Green Party responds to immigration statistics

22 February 2018

The Green Party has called on the Government end the use of immigration detention centres in response to the release of the quarterly immigration statistics.

At the end of December last year there were 2,138 people being held in detention, a 22% drop compared with the same time the year before. On top of this, 407 people were held in prisons [1].

Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party, said:

“Don’t listen to the Government's false boasting about detention. A slight reduction in the number of people locked in these ineffective and inhumane centres is nowhere near good enough.

"Nobody should be locked up without a time limit. We know pressure to end this barbaric practice is building even within Theresa May’s own cabinet. It’s time the Government put a time limit on detention, and looked into community based alternatives so we can end detention for good."
