Green Party delighted by Islington’s fair pay ratio announcement

19 October 2011

The Green Party welcomed Islington's commitment today for equality in pay levels and paying at least the London Living Wage of £8.30 to all directly employed staff.

With the announcement, the Islington council became the first borough in the capital to pledge that the salary of its highest-paid worker will be no more than 10 times the salary of its lowest-paid worker.

Green Party Assembly member Darren Johnson encouraged councils and businesses across the country to follow Islington's example.

Mr Johnson said: "I really welcome this move towards more equal pay, which is setting an example that all councils and businesses should follow. Evidence shows that more equal societies are generally happier and healthier with less violent crime."
