Jean Lambert MEP calls on US Supreme Court to revoke death sentence

21 September 2011

Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London, has spoken out against the scheduled execution of US citizen Troy Davis which is due to take place today at 7pm, local time (00:00 GMT).

Jean, a member of the European Parliament Civil Liberties Committee, said:

"Even as a staunch opponent to the use of the death penalty, this case raises particular concerns. Troy Davis was convicted of murder without a single piece of physical evidence. No blood or DNA tied him to the crime and the weapon has never been located. Seven of the nine witnesses have since retracted their testimonies, saying they were pressured into giving evidence by investigators. Yet despite the fact that significant doubts continue to plague Troy's conviction, Georgia's Board of Pardons have rejected his last plea for clemency.

"I now call upon the Supreme Court to revoke Troy's death sentence with immediate effect."
