Green MEP calls for introduction of 20mph zones as best practice

27 June 2011

Last week, Keith Taylor's amendment supporting the introduction of 20mph (30kmph) zones across residential areas in Europe was adopted by the Transport Committee in the European Parliament.

Speaking on BBC Radio, Keith Taylor said:

"There are a growing number of people in Europe who are living in controlled speeding zones, which is yielding great benefits, especially in safety.

"The European parliament has adopted this as best practice, but this is a decision that should be taken locally. This legislation, which is in the power of the member states, makes it easier and cheaper for local authorities to implement the zones.

"The zones yield a huge benefit to the local area. Portsmouth was the first area to introduce it, across 1200 residential roads. Since then the Department for Transport review has shown a 22% drop in collisions.

"Britain has the highest percentage of pedestrian road fatalities in Europe, and this will achieve a reduction in accidents, serious incidents and fatalities. Every single death is a personal tragedy. This is about safety, it's about reducing pollution, it's cost effective and it saves the health service millions. The pattern of driving also affects emissions.

"I'm delighted to see that Brighton and Hove is taking this forward, and that Worthing and Chichester have already agreed this is what they want."
