Young Greens lead on UK Uncut action in Cardiff

26 February 2011

The Young Greens, the youth branch of the Green Party, have called for mass support of a UK Uncut action in Cardiff this weekend as they attend the Green Party's National Conference. The Young Greens have been supportive of UK Uncut actions nationwide as well as mass student actions and walk-outs on the governments cuts to education and raising of tuition fees.

Co-Chair of the Young Greens Sam Coates said:

“We feel it’s unfair that members of the public have to pay for a crisis they did not cause. Other parties would like us to think that the crisis was caused due to some kind of ‘excessive’ or ‘reckless’ public spending, whilst in fact the under-regulation of the banking sector led us into this mess.”

Caroline Lucas, leader of the Green Party and MP for Brighton Pavilion, offered her support to the work carried out by the Young Greens and grassroots groups like UK Uncut. She said:

“It is absolutely unacceptable that corporations in the UK like Barclays pay only 1% tax and are allowed to get away with massive bonuses funded by the tax payer whilst people are being made redundant, libraries and youth centres are closing down and young people are unfairly being saddled with years of debt through increased tuition fees.”

The Green Party is hoping to win their first Welsh Assembly seat in the upcoming Welsh Assembly elections. The Young Greens have had a 40% increase in membership in just two months in a free membership offer to young people and students.
